Conquer Your Photos Workshop (with video recordings)

In 18 years of helping people with their memory-keeping, I see a lot of people stuck.  It's hard to know who to trust your photos to, it's challenging to find a top-quality yet doable method of preserving your photos and memories in pages, and it's overwhelming to stay on top of your photo organization when you don't have a great system.

I have discovered the BEST resource for digitally storing, organizing, sharing, and printing photos in pages!  Because it's the best I've seen in 18 years of helping people with their memory-keeping, I can't help but share it!  It addresses every photo problem I've heard of!

How to Carry Every Photo You Own in Your Hand (ft. how to save a voicemail forever)

Don't you love that you can show someone a photo just because you have your phone in your pocket?  It's pretty amazing, really.

One of the downsides of photos on phones, though, is that phones have limits.  If you have a 512 GB phone, you have to divide that up between apps, photos, and such.  Same if you have a 64 GB phone.

Another downside is that you can generally only have photos on your phone that you actually took with your phone.  It's a bit complicated to put pictures of, say, your parents' wedding or your great-grandpa Jones on your phone.

Another downside is that phones are not permanent.  A phone can be dropped in a lake, or it can be stolen.  Phones are really easy to lose, too.  In fact, 70 million smartphones are lost each year, with only 7% recovered.

A Permanent Solution to a Temporary Tool

So it sounds like what we need is a permanent solution for accessing as many of our precious photos as we want on our convenient (but temporary) phones without requiring a lot of available gigs that eat into our phone memory capability.

And so I give you:  how to carry every photo you own in your hand.

You only need two things:

  1. the Forever app on your phone
  2. Forever Storage

One is free, and the other you'll buy and own forever (for generations!).

Let's get started!  First, I want to show you how awesome it is to use the Forever app and how it lets me show every picture I own, using my phone without hogging up the memory on my phone.

Isn't that fantastic?!  I love the convenience, but I also love how accessible all my photos are.  I love being that connected to my pictures and having them that shareable.

NOTE:  I am a Forever affiliate (a decision I made because I love it so much), so you will find several affiliate links in this post, from which I earn a commission if you make a purchase, at no extra cost to you.

You can get the free Forever app in just a few minutes.  First, open your (free) Forever account here.  Next, find information about the app here and get the appropriate one for your phone.

Now it's time to learn about Forever Storage and see what's so great about it and which option will work best for you.  Keep in mind that Forever Storage is unlike any other digital cloud photo storage company anywhere!  Here are the differences in a nutshell:

I'm not kidding when I say there is nothing else out there that offers this.  (If you haven't already read "What You're Really Signing Up for with Digital Photo Storage," you should!)

This one-minute video shows how Forever Storage is really a permanent home in the cloud for your photos, videos, and memories.  There's really nothing else like it.

The video explains how the Guarantee Fund works, too.

Social Media Isn't Photo Storage, Either

Don't forget, too, that posting pictures on social media is not a permanent (or secure) place for your photos.

It's definitely a great way to share photos immediately, but Facebook and Instagram (among others) do not guarantee the privacy or the permanence of your photos.  Don't use social media as your photo storage because it (very literally!) is not FOREVER!  Here are three very important reasons:
  1. You probably already know that social media platforms change their policies any time they want.  Social media sites can be shut down, change, or discontinue their services any time they want, even without warning!  This is often stated in their fine print.
  2. Social media sites aren't set up to handle large file sizes, so they compress photos, which lowers their quality.  (This is why it doesn't take forever to scroll through Facebook or Instagram--you don't have to wait for all those photos to load because the quality has been lowered so they'll load quickly.)  Your photos look fine on social media, but if you want to download them back to make a photo-memory book or a wedding invitation, they'll most likely have a fuzzy, low-quality look.  And there's no guarantee from any social media site that you'll be able to download them back anyway.
  3. Any photo uploaded to social media is subject to data mining.  Data mining is the process of sorting through large amounts of data to identify patterns and relationships.  This is why if you Googled "blue shoes," you start seeing ads for blue shoes on Facebook.  This happens with photos as well.  Photos may or may not be private on social media.

Please don't think you can use social media as a photo storage platform.  It was never designed to work that way.

The Convenience of a Phone + the Permanence of Private Cloud Storage You Own
With the Forever app on my phone (or tablet) and however many GB of photo, video, and audio files I want to save in the cloud in Forever Storage, I can carry every photo I own in my hand--even photos I didn't take with my phone, such as pictures of my 20-something kids as babies and photos of my now-gone grandparents.

This video tells you everything you need to know about Forever Storage!  Grab some popcorn and spend 20 minutes learning something that can change your life.  It's amazing.

And this quick video shows you options for organizing and even tagging your photos in your Forever account:

You can see all the Forever Storage options here(Don't be thrown off by the "monthly" cost shown there.  You still OWN your storage space because you are buying it.  The monthly breakdown is just an option if you'd rather pay by month instead of all at once.  You are not paying a monthly fee--you are purchasing your own personal Forever Storage.  And you can always buy some and then if you discover you need more, buy more later.  That's what I did.)

And, remember, it's permanent storage!

You Can Even Save Special Voicemails!

By the way, you can even store voicemails in your Forever Storage!

So if you've got a special one you've been saving on your phone for a while, give it a permanent home!  It's easy to upload to your Forever account with the (free) app, too!  Here's how:

That's It!

And that's all there is to it.  You can carry every photo you own in your hand, plus have the peace of mind that comes from having your photos privately, securely, and permanently preserved for your lifetime plus 100 years.

Your grandkids can use the latest app to show their friends your wedding pictures.  Imagine that.

P.S. I've also put together a list of ways to save the most on Forever products and services, including Forever storage, so just click that link to see.

How to Create Photo and Story Treasures

This blog has been dedicated to all things photo, memory, and story for well over a decade now!  Yes, we've had a sprinkling of crafting and DIY, too, but all-in-all, it's really about photo & story treasures.  It's about self-care, family connections, creating legacy and heritage in your home, and connecting with your own heart.

If you're not sure how something as basic as a photo and a memory can do all that, it's definitely time to learn about the benefits of memory-keeping.

If you're like most people, you don't have a consistent memory-keeping solution that works for you.  You might be "behind on" your photos or your scrapbooking or your photobooks.  You might feel a lot of Photo Overwhelm.  Or you might have a desire to do something with your photos and memories but don't know where to start.

So start something new in 2022!

Photo and Story Treasures is your go-to resource to make photos and memories into something meaningful.  Here's what Photo and Story Treasures ft. Forever can do for you, from permanent digital photo storage to printed treasures you can hold in your hands (and heart):

So that's what Photo and Story Treasures can do for you, but let's look at why it matters to you in the first place.  It's so much more than you probably think.

Why You Take Photos

Taking photos these days is so commonplace that you've probably never stopped to think about why you do it.

A photographic image has power to unleash emotions, connect people, and bring back to our minds why we took the photo in the first place.  Photos connect us with our stories.  Photos let us see things or times or people that are gone. Photos have been shown in studies to boost mood (in other words, make us happier) as well as increase relaxation and lower stress.

In fact, if you click that link, you can read about studies done on the effects of photos on your happiness level.  Spoiler: looking at your photos has been shown to make you *ten times* happier than eating chocolate!

And photos are about even more than happiness, especially when they're connected to your experiences.

Kids who know their family stories have greater resiliency, higher self-esteem, and do better when faced with challenges.  This is especially true with stories of those who have gone before, but it's also true of the story those kiddos are living right now.  A current "family history" is the vacation you took to the beach last year and going to Grandma's 80th birthday celebration last weekend.  The photos and memories you record from events like those and other everyday events are your story!  And your child's story.

Having access to our own photos and stories makes a big difference.

What To Do With Them

We have precious pictures and meaningful memories, but they often don't make it off our phones or out of our heads.  The best thing you can do with a photo or a memory is preserve it.

NOTE:  I am a Forever affiliate (a decision I made because I love it so much), so you will find several affiliate links in this post, from which I earn a commission if you make a purchase, at no extra cost to you.

Here's what I've discovered about why I take pictures and why I make sure I preserve them with my memories:

  1. I take pictures because I want to remember special moments.  I want my kids to have the benefits (listed above) of being the stars of their own photo-storybooks.  I want them to be able to sit down on their beds after a really hard day and be able to look back at happy times and get a little lost in better times for a few minutes.
  2. I want that for myself, too.  My pictures on my phone don't tell the whole story.  Putting those pictures on actual pages I can thumb through and smile at later lifts my heart.  Being able to put down on those pages some descriptions and memories of why those photos mean something to me allows me some therapeutic time in my own head and heart that increases my gratitude and re-centers me as it gives me perspective.
Why It's So Much More Than Photos

In this busy world where we often feel like our life controls us instead of us controlling our lives, we often don't take opportunities to sit down and breathe, to connect with ourselves, to record our life experiences through photos and memories.  There is great power (and peace) in all these things.  Photo & Story Treasures will help you grasp it.

Yes, creating treasures from your photos and stories is meaningful for you and for kids and for loved ones and can directly affect your happiness and self-esteem and feelings of connection and capability.  But it's even more than that.

One thing I love about the tools at Photo and Story Treasures is that you can do the important, meaningful work of creating photo-storybooks of vacations and weddings and everyday moments like first days of school--it's a great way to get into a regular habit of preserving your photos and memories, whether you consider yourself a digital scrapbooker or not--and it's also an important way to give heartfelt, irreplaceable gifts to people who might need a little extra boost.

But it's also perfect and beautiful for life storybooks to remember those who have passed on.

Photo & Story Treasures Can Do All That For You

This blog is an amazing resource, full of tips, strategies, solutions, ideas, and helps.  Click around (especially at the tabs along the top--accessible from a desktop but not mobile) and find plans and approaches that will work for you.  Above all, contact me with any questions or help you need!

There's no better gift.

There's no better option.

And there's no time like the present.

Many people are overwhelmed with years of photos, not sure what the best ways to preserve and share them are.  This method provides them with the peace of mind that comes from fireproofing their photos by giving them a permanent home.  People love escaping the overwhelm and enjoying convenient access to their memories by safeguarding them at Forever.

This 30-minute class will give you all the details.

The Best Self-Care Method (that you've never even thought of)

It's a good thing that self-care is talked about and emphasized more these days.  It's a really good thing!  We have more on our plates than ever before, and I would venture to say that the information age (access to all known information in existence through a device in your pocket) puts more on our minds than ever before, too.

When I was a young mom, self-care was the last thing on my mind, and the last thing I thought I could fit into my life.  Now that I’m a mom of more self-sufficient kids, I understand the importance of self-care, but I also realize that back then I was actually doing one of the best methods of self-care there is without even realizing it!

I definitely want to share this awesome self-care method with you, but first let’s look at self-care a little more.

What Self-Care Is and Is Not

Moira Lawler from Everyday Health states it well:  “Let’s clear up one common misconception from the get-go: Self-care is not synonymous with self-indulgence or being selfish. Self-care means taking care of yourself so that you can be healthy, you can be well, you can do your job, you can help and care for others, and you can do all the things you need to and want to accomplish in a day.”

I feel that phrase bears repeating for some of us:  Self-care is not synonymous with self-indulgence or being selfish.

Self-care includes things like getting enough sleep and eating good food that fuels your body, but it’s a lot more than that, too.  For an introvert like me, self-care is spending time alone with myself or spending time with cherished friends or family.  For an extrovert, self-care might look like a night out on the town with friends or attending/throwing a party.

So think more about what self-care looks like for you than what it looks like for someone else.

The Benefits

Lawler’s article refers to several studies which show that consistent self-care leads to many broad benefits, such as better health—both physical and mental—including reduced stress, development of coping skills, ability to combat burnout, improved immune system, increased productivity, and higher self-esteem.

Jane Stark at Botanica Health lists five wonderful benefits of self-care: slowing down makes you more productive; self-care boosts your immune system, improves your self-compassion, helps you find out who you really are, and empowers you to give more to others (not less).

How to Make the Time for Self-Care

While “manicure” and “read a book” often come up as self-care suggestions, it can be difficult for young moms and other busy women to find the time for things like this.  The good news is that self-care is whatever you want it to be.  It can take as little or as much time as you want it to.  I have a friend whose self-care practice includes buying herself fresh flowers once a week to keep on her bedside table.

So, before I share my best self-care suggestion, I want to share with you a few ideas for making time—and even thinking about time differently.  These are some of my favorite suggestions!

The Best Self-Care You’ve Never Thought Of

Now that we’ve got all the business out of the way, let’s look at the best self-care method you’ve never even thought of.  I love it because it involves something you already have (and it’s something you already love, too).  I’ve called this best self-care method “the best kind of retail therapy,” and it’s definitely true.  (In fact, you can jump over to that article to see for yourself.)

You may be completely surprised that the best method of self-care you’ve probably never even thought of is:  your own pictures.

I don’t mean the pictures that are in a big jumble on your phone that you can’t find or keep track of, I mean pictures that you take time to give meaning to, like this:

Pictures are much more powerful than we give them credit for!  Remember that list of benefits of self-care?  It turns out, taking time to sit down and preserve your pictures does many of the same things:

  • creates connections
  • raises self-esteem
  • increases a sense of belonging
  • has a grounding, centering effect
  • reduces stress
  • improves memory
  • creates perspective and power
  • contributes to healing from grief
  • increases happiness
  • increases relaxation
  • and, my personal favorite:  shown in studies to make you feel happier than chocolate!

(There are many references and sources from which I compiled that list of benefits—most of them can be found at this link.)

What I love most about preserving my photos and memories as self-care is that it is not only so good for me, but good for my family, too, since they get to enjoy the by-product of my self-care for years and years to come.

NOTE:  I am a Forever affiliate (a decision I made because I love it so much), so you will find several affiliate links in this post, from which I earn a commission if you make a purchase, at no extra cost to you.

My Go-To Self Care

When my kiddos were little, my “me-time” was getting together with a friend to work on scrapbooks while our kids played.  It entailed hauling little carts of pictures and scrapbooking material, but we’d do it for several hours a few days in a row, so we banged out page after page, got some “Mommy Time,” and had play dates at the same time.  It was perfect.

I didn’t realize until years later that it was self-care.

In fact, it inspired me to write my first ebook, The Secret Ingredient to Self-Care and Wellness (which you can read free at that link).  It’s about a 40-minute read—and perfect for “me time.”

Nowadays, those kiddos have grown and my friend and I live in different states. I do my photo-storybooking (a.k.a. scrapbooking) mostly on my own using just my laptop and a digital scrapbooking and professional publishing company I’m completely in love with.  And sometimes I Zoom with my friend while I’m working!

Now What?

1.     Consider what will benefit you the most in terms of self-care.

2.     Consider what you can do to make time for it.  (Although we certainly benefit from slowing down and having non-kid time, remember that I used “me time” and “play dates” and “work on scrapbooks” in combination!  There are many options for making time.)

3.     Prioritize.  Be your own best friend on this and don’t let yourself down.

Involve your pictures.  It’s the best method of self-care you’ll ever think of.

Thanks for reading!  Share this post on social media and tag someone amazing who could use a little higher-quality self-care!
